Full Biography
Born on April 26, 1981, in Malaysia as Shauna Macdonald, the Scottish actress moved back to her family's native Edinburgh at the age of three. She developed her passion for acting at the PACE Youth Theatre alongside fellow actor James McAvoy before honing her craft at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.
Macdonald rose to international prominence for her harrowing portrayal of Sarah Carter in the 2005 horror masterpiece The Descent, a role she later reprised in its 2009 sequel. Her versatile career spans high-profile television series such as Spooks, where she played Sam Buxton, and critically acclaimed films like Filth (2013), in which she starred as Carole Robertson. A multi-award-winning performer, she secured a BAFTA Scotland Award in 2018 for her role in White Chamber. Beyond the screen, she serves as the co-artistic director of the Edinburgh Youth Theatre and is a dedicated marathon runner.
